09 Jan Effective Tips for Online Networking
Its obvious, there is a significant difference between in-person and online networking. And in various ways, building online relationships can be easier. Yet, it’s still challenging for those are not sure how to network online properly or those that are used to the digital world and now are forced to enter this new dimension due to COVID-19.
Due to the simplicity of digital communication, we tend to underestimate how complicated it is to stand out, especially when we are trying to connect with social media influencers and industry leaders.
Here are seven effective tips for networking online.
Get Creative
Experienced networkers’ knowns that the shortest path to the right person is not a straight line. Unfortunately, our impulse online is to bypass this process by reaching out directly to the person we want to connect with via various social media platforms or email.
The best way to do this is to know the person behind the person. For high-level leaders and influencers, having knowledge of who their gatekeepers are should be your first quest. In other words, think of department heads, administrative assistants, or even junior associates.
The shortest path can be obtained by compiling company and individual profiles, contact information, and even associated websites.
The Fine Line Between Investigating Someone Online and Being Creepy.
Get to know the person you are trying to connect with without creeping them out. The best way to do this is to only mix personal information into your approach when someone’s shared that information publicly.
Most helpful on this front is looking for shared educational interests, public groups, causes, and — of course — contacts.
What are you brining to the table?
The best method is to find a way to add value for a massive number of people because it will give you better chances of attracting abundance in your life. Present the value you are bringing to the table before asking.
Examples of giving include social sharing, commenting online, and insightful feedback via email. On the larger scale it could be supporting crowd-funded projects and including their insights in your publications.
Timing is Everything!
Not knowing the right time to approach someone is crucial. You might reach out and they will not be interested because the time is not right for them. That is where reach comes in. Knowing when that person is most in need is the best time to try to connect.
If you want the attention of a politician reach out to them during an election year.
Make it personal
One of the greatest mistakes’ people make is not taking the time and into thought into their first approach. If the message is too general and out of nowhere it can instantly trigger a negative reaction. Instead, find and include personal context that promotes trust and gets you the right kind of attraction.
How can you include personal context? Do not ignore shared education, work history, and social causes.
Short and Sweet
Let us be honest, long messages are a turn off especially when you are trying to network with someone. Keep it short.
Short paragraphs. Short sentences. Short words. If you cannot say it in five lines or less, then you are trying to do way too much. Chill! Your approach and follow ups should be simple to read, simple to comprehend, and simple to say yes to.
Be clear and precise
Misunderstanding is an online networking murderer. So also examine how you end your message. The best way is to ask for the next, smallest action your new relationship can take.
One message = one asks. It’s really that simple. Be specific to you’re their needs and your value and be clear and precise on what you’re asking.
