Amazon is pumping up its Prime membership perks, announcing a new fuel savings benefit that could help members save up to $70 annually at the pump. The e-commerce giant’s latest offering gives Prime subscribers a 10-cent-per-gallon discount at approximately 7,000 BP, Amoco, and AM/PM locations nationwide.
To access the savings, members need to connect their Amazon account with BP’s loyalty app, Earnify. The timing could prove fortunate for consumers – while GasBuddy reports gas prices are at their lowest since January, rising global oil prices amid Middle East tensions have sparked concerns about potential price surges.
The fuel discount adds another layer to Prime’s increasingly diverse benefits package, which already encompasses streaming entertainment, delivery services, and healthcare perks. With Prime’s 184 million-strong subscriber base at stake, the move signals Amazon’s determination to maintain its edge in an increasingly crowded membership program landscape.
“Amazon’s strategy has always centered on making Prime indispensable through benefit accumulation,” explains Neil Saunders, retail analyst and managing director at GlobalData Retail. “The more comprehensive the program becomes, the stronger its retention power.”
Industry watchers note the gas savings initiative likely responds to Walmart+’s similar offering, which provides members 10-cent discounts at 14,000 stations. As newcomers like Target Circle 360 and Wayfair Rewards enter the space, Prime’s expansion into fuel benefits demonstrates Amazon’s commitment to staying ahead.
However, Prime’s “everything company” ambitions present challenges. At $139 annually – roughly 40% more than Walmart and Target’s competing programs – Prime must justify its premium pricing. Saunders cautions that program bloat could lead to customer confusion and benefit underutilization.
“The challenge for Amazon isn’t just adding benefits – it’s ensuring they deliver real value,” Saunders notes. “They’ll need to carefully monitor how different member segments use Prime to avoid simply throwing perks at the wall.”
For Prime members, the new gas savings complement an already extensive benefits portfolio. For Amazon, it represents another strategic move to maintain its leadership in the increasingly competitive membership program space.
