Dollarama Unveils Ambitious Growth Plan: 2,200 Stores by 2034

Dollarama, Canada’s leading discount retailer, announced plans for a major nationwide expansion following strong third-quarter results released December 4. The Montreal-based company aims to grow its retail footprint to 2,200 locations by 2034, significantly upgrading its previous target of 2,000 stores by 2031.

The expansion announcement comes amid impressive financial performance, with Q3 sales climbing 5.7% to $1.56 billion compared to $1.48 billion in the same period last year. The company added 18 new stores during the quarter, bringing its current total to 1,601 locations, while comparable store sales grew 3.3%.
To support its western expansion, Dollarama has invested $46.7 million in land for a new Calgary logistics hub. The facility, set to be operational by 2027, will serve as a warehouse and distribution centre for Western Canadian stores, creating a more efficient two-node logistics model.

Neil Rossy, Dollarama’s president and CEO, attributed the growth plans to the company’s strong market performance. “Our performance demonstrates the enduring relevance of our business model for consumers from coast to coast,” he stated, noting that customer demand for consumables remains strong, though seasonal item sales have softened compared to last year.

Market analyst Sylvain Charlebois from Dalhousie University’s agri-food analytics lab explains the retailer’s success: “Their business model is very lean. They keep things tight with operational costs. And so that’s why typically when Dollarama sees more traffic, they see more profits.”

The expansion strategy reflects growing consumer demand for discount retail options as Canadians seek ways to stretch their shopping dollars. Despite facing a class-action lawsuit over hidden fees, Dollarama continues to see strong growth and customer traffic across its locations.
