Ford Motor Company has announced a sweeping recall of more than 148,000 vehicles across North America, citing two major safety issues that could increase the risk of crashes. The recall, confirmed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), affects several popular models, including the F-150 pickup, Expedition SUV, Lincoln Navigator, and the 2025 Ford Explorer.
The largest portion of the recall targets 123,611 vehicles from model years 2017-2018, including the F-150, Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator. According to NHTSA documentation, these vehicles may experience a brake fluid leak from the master cylinder into the brake booster. This defect can impair braking effectiveness, increase stopping distances, and elevate the risk of an accident. Owners of affected vehicles will be notified and can have the master cylinder or brake booster replaced free of charge at Ford dealerships.
A separate recall involves 24,655 units of the 2025 Ford Explorer. The issue centers on a software malfunction in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), which may reset while the vehicle is in motion. This reset can damage the parking system or cause the engine to stall, potentially resulting in a loss of drive power or a rollaway if the vehicle is parked without the parking brake engaged. Ford will address the problem with a free software update, and notification letters are expected to be mailed to owners by May 26, 2025.
Ford has also issued several smaller recalls throughout April, affecting models such as the 2024-2025 E-Transit Chassis Cab, 2024 Ranger, 2024 Lincoln Nautilus, and certain 2022-2023 Transit vehicles. These recalls address issues ranging from high-voltage battery packs to power window malfunctions and rearview camera defects.
Ford owners are encouraged to check if their vehicle is subject to any recalls by visiting the official Ford recall page or using the FordPass App. Owners can enter their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to see if their car is included in the latest safety campaigns. Ford will also send notification letters to the last known registered owners within sixty days of the recall announcement.
Ford has stated that customer safety remains its top priority. All repairs and software updates related to these recalls will be performed at no cost to owners. The company urges drivers of affected vehicles to schedule service appointments promptly upon receiving notification.
