Keke Palmer, the multi-talented actress, singer, and media mogul, is taking control of her personal brand in a way few celebrities do: by becoming the chief marketing officer of herself. Known for roles in Nope, Scream Queens, and Big Mouth, Palmer has also carved out a successful music career and is now focused on building her own media empire.
At Brandweek 2024 in Phoenix, Arizona, Palmer revealed her unique approach to managing her brand. “I make a deck for everything,” she shared onstage. “I live for a deck, about me! Like, ‘These are the brands and words that describe Keke Palmer.’”
Palmer’s growing list of titles includes actress, singer-songwriter, producer, entrepreneur, and, as of this week, ADWEEK’s 2024 Brand Genius award winner. Since 2022, she’s also added “media owner” to her résumé.
Despite this impressive list, Palmer remains grounded, finding freedom in diversifying her career. “Diversifying has given me so much freedom,” she said. “It’s allowed me the opportunity to dig into different corners and still be able to feed my family.”
Motherhood has further transformed Palmer’s vision. Since welcoming her one-year-old son, Leo, she has become more intentional about the projects she takes on. “He’s given me so much more clarity and intention about what works for me and doesn’t, and how I want to show up for myself,” she explained.
For much of her career, Palmer focused on her personal growth and success. Now, she’s shifting gears to build a legacy for her son that’s rooted in community—a value she was raised on. “I want to hand down to him this concept of community,” Palmer said.
This shift hasn’t been easy. Palmer acknowledges the challenge of transitioning from being the sole focus of her brand to creating a broader infrastructure that includes others. However, she credits motherhood with giving her a clearer perspective and the ability to prioritize differently. “When you have a kid, everything comes into perspective. Now it’s like, I ain’t got time for that.”
One of Palmer’s most significant contributions to her community is through her digital network, KeyTV, which she launched in 2022. The platform is dedicated to showcasing BIPOC talent and “sharing the keys to culture,” with the goal of creating opportunities for diverse voices in entertainment.
KeyTV has already released original series like Heaux & Tell and the comedy Bosses, highlighting diverse talent both in front of and behind the camera. “What I’m trying to achieve with KeyTV is the realization that, especially as a person of color, you don’t always have to be a performer,” Palmer said. She emphasized the importance of showcasing BIPOC talent in various roles across the industry, from directors and writers to publicists and marketers.
In addition to her media ventures, Palmer will release her second book, Master of Me: The Memoir, in November. The book follows her 2017 debut I Don’t Belong to You and delves deeper into her journey toward self-mastery, independence, and entrepreneurship.
The memoir will explore how to balance personal values with professional ambition and the importance of “commodifying yourself without losing yourself.” For Palmer, the key is mastering oneself within existing systems rather than letting them define you.
Looking ahead, Palmer is set to team up with singer-songwriter SZA in 2025 for a new buddy comedy produced by actress and writer Issa Rae.
As Palmer’s influence grows, she’s become more selective about the brands she partners with. She recently passed on a high-paying deal with a fashion brand because it didn’t align with her personal values. “Money has not been the thing that has moved me,” Palmer explained. “We all need it, but you want to go to places that make you feel good.”
Through all her endeavors, Palmer remains focused on building a legacy that extends beyond her own success—a legacy that empowers her community, showcases diverse talent, and reflects her authentic self.
