Shaquille O’Neal’s $24M Youth Complex: A Slam Dunk for Las Vegas’ Future

A Vision Rooted in Community

NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal has long been known for his towering presence on the court, but his latest move in Las Vegas cements his legacy as a champion for youth empowerment. The Shaquille O’Neal Youth Development Complex, a $24 million initiative, broke ground in June 2025 and is set to become a transformative hub for underserved children and teens in the city’s northeast corridor.

More Than Bricks and Mortar

Located near East Lake Mead Boulevard and North Lamb Boulevard, the 30,000-square-foot facility will serve up to 180 youth daily after school. The complex is a collaboration between The Shaquille O’Neal Foundation, Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada, and Communities In Schools of Southern Nevada. It will also house the nation’s first-ever CIS Alumni Center, supporting former students as they navigate adulthood.

Key Features

  • Academic Support: Classrooms, tutoring, and homework help for K-12 students.

  • Mental Wellness: Dedicated rooms and mentorship programs.

  • Recreation: Full gym, multi-sports field, boxing and MMA facilities.

  • Technology Labs: Innovation spaces for digital learning.

  • Early Childhood Learning: Licensed childcare for infants and preschoolers.

  • Community Safety: On-site Metropolitan Police Department substation123.

Inspiration Born from Experience

O’Neal’s drive to give back is deeply personal. Growing up, the Boys & Girls Club was his “second home,” a safe haven his mother insisted he attend after school. “The schools and projects where I lived at, right across the street was a Boys and Girls Club. So my mother’s instructions were, ‘After school, you better be in that Boys and Girls Club when I come pick you up, or else,’” O’Neal recalled at the groundbreaking ceremony.

The idea for the complex was sparked in 2018 during a lunch with O’Neal, his agent Perry Rogers, and the late Elaine Wynn. Their shared vision: to create a resource center that would fill a critical gap in a “service desert” of Las Vegas, where few youth services existed.

A Diverse Coalition for Change

The project’s impact is amplified by a broad coalition of partners:

  • Las Vegas Raiders: Sponsoring the outdoor multi-sports field.

  • UFC: Supporting the boxing and MMA center.

  • Clark County: Donated nearly five acres of land for the site.

  • Local Leaders: From education, law enforcement, and business, all united in support134.

Sandra Douglass Morgan, president of the Raiders and a local native, emphasized the center’s potential: “I’m hopeful that we’ll see the next Super Bowl athlete or a Hall of Famer that will be starting their first steps on this field right here, and we could say that we played some small part in it”.

Economic and Social Impact

  • Jobs: The project is expected to create 75 construction jobs and 20 full-time positions, serving an estimated 2,400 youth annually.

  • Community Safety: The on-site police substation aims to foster positive relationships between law enforcement and youth, promoting public safety and trust.

  • Long-Term Vision: The CIS Alumni Center will help young adults ages 18–24 with college and career readiness, extending the center’s impact beyond childhood.

A Legacy of Giving

O’Neal’s philanthropic work in Las Vegas is not new. His foundation has previously renovated local clubhouses and basketball courts, and his annual “Shaq-to-School” event provides essential supplies to hundreds of students. The new complex, however, represents his most ambitious effort yet—a “bold investment in our youth, our community and our future,” as Dr. Lisa Morris Hibbler, executive director of The Shaquille O’Neal Foundation, described it.

Words to Inspire

O’Neal’s message to the next generation is simple but powerful:

“Excellence is not a singular act, but a habit. You are what you repeatedly do.”

Looking Ahead

Set for completion in late 2026, the Shaquille O’Neal Youth Development Complex is poised to become a beacon of hope and opportunity for Las Vegas’ youth. In the words of O’Neal’s agent, Perry Rogers: “We wanted to do something no one has done before. Once you have a leader like Shaquille saying, ‘this is our true north’ … you’d be surprised how many people will come alongside”.
